Edward Waller Loades

I was born early in the year of our Lord 1819 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. My baptism took place on the 8th May 1819 at Saint Nicholas Church[i]. I was the first of five children born to Edward Loads and Harriot Bell. I only remember my youngest sister Mary Ann clearly.  Mary Ann was born in 1826[ii].

I do not know what happened to my oldest sister Harriett, born in 1821[iii]. For I have no records of her.

One sister Caroline died as an infant and was only on this earth for a short time[iv]. That year many young children died in Great Yarmouth.

All of my brothers and sisters had Waller as their middle name. In the passing of time the significance of this name has been forgotten. My father had this middle name as well and it can be found on our marriage certificates and the Poll registers[v] for Great Yarmouth.

I learnt my trade as a joiner and carpenter from my father[vi]. He was entered as a Freeman of Great Yarmouth, in June 1816. Having learnt his trade from Eastmure, Hodgkinson and Howes[vii].

We were living in London by the time my apprenticeship began. We moved to London sometime between 1826 when Mary Ann was born and 1829 when my only brother Luke died[viii]. By the time of the 1841 census I was living and working as a carpenter with my parents, sister and other lodgers’ in Wellington Street, Clerkenwell[ix].
